The journal Science Advances published a study by scientists from the Scripps Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who found an explanation for the fact that women predominate among those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. By examining brain samples from both Alzheimer’s and non-Alzheimer’s men and women, the researchers found that women with Alzheimer’s had six times more of the acute-phase immune protein C3 than men with the same diagnosis.
C3 causes inflammation in the brain, and this activates the work of macrophages that can absorb foreign or harmful substances to the body. But these same macrophages also destroy the synapses through which neurons communicate with each other, which ultimately manifests itself in the form of Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition, it turned out that the decrease in the sex hormone estrogen during menopause stimulates the formation of C3 protein, which also significantly accelerates the development of the disease.
