Scientists from the Autonomous University of Madrid found in a study that the Mediterranean diet can bring more benefits if you add to it the same, that is, the Mediterranean lifestyle. The results were presented at a conference of the American Heart Association.
Middle-aged and older Britons were encouraged to add not only the Mediterranean diet to their lives, but also Mediterranean social habits and activities. More than 110,000 Britons aged 40 to 75 took part in research on the “Mediterranean” theme. On average, each of them was followed for over nine years.
The analysis showed that the better a person adhered to the Mediterranean lifestyle, the lower their risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular disease, or another cause. On average, according to the announced results, the risk was reduced by 28-29%.
Eating habits allowed the study to take into account the consumption of salt, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Another section looked at whether people ate foods with family and friends, whether they engaged in physical activity with others, and how often they saw their loved ones.
