Birds resort to symbolic gestures, said ornithologists who observed the behavior of Japanese tits. It was believed that symbolic gestures are characteristic only of humans and some monkeys.
Scientists have noticed that tits that nest in tree hollows with a narrow entrance sometimes stop in front of the nest and begin to flap their wings. According to ornithologists, the bird thus invites its partner to fly first, and the movement can be interpreted as “after you.” Such movements were more typical for females.
If the birds flew up to the nest one by one, they did not show any gestures and immediately flew into the hollow.
