Scientists have confirmed the authenticity of the “stereotype” about Italian gestures
Scientists from Lund University tested whether Italian speakers actually gesticulate more actively than those who speak other languages.
Psychologists compared how Italian-speaking and Swedish-speaking volunteers communicate. As it turned out, Italian speakers gesture approximately twice as actively – they had an average of 21.95 gestures per 100 words, while Swedish speakers had 11.04 gestures.
The meaning of gestures also differed – the Swedes more often tried to convey this or that thought, and the Italians more often tried to convey an attitude towards the topic of conversation or the interlocutor.
