Full immersion in virtual reality allows a new development of Russian scientists. Recently, they received a patent for an omnidirectional track, with which you can wander and even run through illusory worlds, while remaining in place.
As Aleksey Potomov, the head of the team of authors who developed the simulator, told MK, the track can be used for educational, sports and rehabilitation purposes. It is a two-layer round platform (the lower layer is made of chipboard, the upper layer is made of slippery polymer) mounted on a metal cross. Steel racks are attached to the cross on three sides. On the platform-facing side of each, there are carriages connected by aluminum tubes to an aluminum support ring. This is a device for fixing and turning the user, it consists of a frame support, a small ring located in it, made in the form of a bearing, and a cover. To the small ring there are carbines on cables that are fastened to the player’s belt. The rack carriages are connected by aluminum cables with weights located on the outer side of the supports. Their weight is selected in such a way as to create an “elevator effect”, that is, so that the impact of the support ring on the player is minimal and it does not pull him up or down.
To immerse in an illusory world, the user puts on virtual glasses, picks up manipulators, and positioning sensors in virtual space are attached to his legs. In order to “walk” on it, the player puts on sliding shoes and fastens to the ring. It fixes him in the center of the court, so when he “walks”, his feet simply slide on the platform, while the virtual glasses create the illusion of real movement. Thanks to the sliding of the small ring around the circumference, he can turn, and when he crouches, the carriages associated with the ring slide along the supports. Thus, the simulator in a limited space creates the effect of complete immersion of the user in the virtual world, he can freely choose the direction and speed of his movement, jump and squat.
