Schroeder called Zelensky’s idea to return Crimea meaningless

The idea of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to return Crimea to the country by military means does not make sense, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said in an interview with ABC newspaper.
“Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev decided to hand it over to Ukraine, then part of the USSR. He did this thinking that the Soviet Union would last as long as the Catholic Church, which, fortunately, did not happen.” said Schroeder.
According to the ex-chancellor, the return of Crimea to Ukraine will become possible over time.
“Not in 99 years, as in the case of Hong Kong, but it can be resolved in the face of the next generation,” Schroeder explained.
On August 23, Zelensky announced that Ukraine will return Crimea in any way that it considers right, and will not consult on this issue with other countries.
Crimea became part of Russia in 2014 after a referendum. According to its results, 96.77% of voters in the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Nevertheless, Kyiv continues to insist that Crimea is Ukrainian territory.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spokethat Western countries will “never recognize” the annexation of the territories of Ukraine to Russia and will continue to exert sanctions pressure on Moscow. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is “finally closed.”
