Schools of the LPR will study the Ukrainian language as an elective

In LPR schools, the Ukrainian language will not remain in the curriculum as a compulsory subject, but it will be possible to study it as an optional subject. This statement was made by the Minister of Education and Science of the LPR Ivan Kusov.

“Within the framework of an elective curriculum, each school can choose a large number of additional hours if there is a need for learning, if parents and children have a desire to learn the Ukrainian language,” Kusov explained (quote by “Luganskinformtsentr”).

According to Kusov, educational institutions in the liberated regions will receive a complete set of textbooks from the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation by the beginning of the academic year. He added that the delivery of additional Russian textbooks to other territories of the LPR is carried out by the regions of Russia, which have taken patronage over the cities and regions of the republic.

Moreover, 106 teachers from Russia will come to the LPR, who agreed to work in the regions and cities of the republic.

After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the Russian authorities began to take steps to integrate the DPR and LPR into the Russian education system. In early June, the Ministry of Education reported that from September 1, schools in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as in the liberated territories of Ukraine, would switch to new Russian educational standards.

At the end of July, the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov said that schoolchildren from the DPR and LPR would be able to study the Ukrainian language at will. According to him, such training programs are in a “high stage of readiness.”

At the same time, Russian language and literature were excluded from the school curriculum in Ukraine. This was reported on August 16 by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine. In particular, from programs involving the study of foreign literature, removed works of Russian and Belarusian writers, replacing them with Western ones. Changes will also affect the history program. It will include a separate educational block dedicated to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine that began in 2014.
