The Ministry of Culture of Dagestan announced the adoption of “administrative response measures” to the leadership of the Dagestan Art School (DCU) after the scandal surrounding the fashion show. It’s about the thesis of a student of the DCU design department. During the show at DCU, models in red dresses and red headscarves with whitened faces appeared among the audience in hijabs on the catwalk. They carried a huge red cross on their backs, entangled in a material resembling barbed wire or dried thorns.
On June 25, a video of the show was posted on a popular Instagram account (the social network is banned in the Russian Federation) tut.dagestan (about 2 million subscribers), which caused a scandal. Some commentators demanded that the DCU leadership be held accountable for “degradation,” while others reproached for moralizing. After that, the Ministry of Culture of Dagestan announced the start of an internal audit in relation to the leadership and teachers of the school. RIA Novosti reported that on June 26, the department held a meeting with representatives of the DCU, “the clergy and the sports community”, as a result of which the director of the school was reprimanded.
The DCU administration previously stated that the student’s thesis under discussion is dedicated to the English designer and fashion designer Alexander McQueen (he committed suicide in 2010 due to depression after the death of his mother). “A man passed away, being on the crest of success, being the most famous and best-selling. A diploma is a discussion about an extraordinary person. The theme was developed on the basis of his works and discussions about fashion, developed as a theatrical costume, ”the DCU explained. An “additional source of inspiration” for the work, added at the educational institution, was Federico Fellini’s film “Juliet and the Spirits”. “During the implementation of the graduation project, no provocative or propaganda tasks were set,” the DCU assured.
The press service of the Ministry of Culture of Dagestan reported that other organizational conclusions were made from the show, in particular, “the requirements for the delivery of theses have changed” – without specifying how.
