It has become known what the “works” returned by the State Duma to the school curriculum with amendments to the Law “On Education” will consist of. The Ministry of Education reports that the program will consist of five mandatory modules: “Production and Technology”, “Material and Food Processing Technologies”, “Computer Graphics. Drawing”, “Robotics” and “3D modeling”. There will also be a choice of variable courses: from “Aircraft modeling” and “Media technology” to animal husbandry and crop production. “Labor” starts in schools on September 1.

With some stretch, we can say that the “works” are the “Technology” that has already taken place in the school. All five invariant modules (mandatory for study) and even three variable ones are in the approved “Technology” of 2023. It is also not new that in grades 5-7, two hours a week will be allocated for “Labor”, in grades 8-9 – one hour.

“Trud” of the 21st century differs from the school of 30 years ago in that the program contains a lot of theory. Thus, the first module “Technologies for processing materials and food products” (read, “carpentry” and cooking) contains such cultural dives as “Paper and its properties. Paper production – history and modernity.” Or the history of the use of wood, folk crafts. And cooking and preparation for it range from information about kitchen ergonomics and table etiquette to the steps of the “food pyramid.” And nutrition in the style of a healthy lifestyle to boot.

It’s the same with sewing. It all starts with the history of weaving culture, the origin and properties of fabrics. And through the structure of the sewing machine with all its gears and “feet” – to the output of the product. Bags for changing, potholders for the kitchen and “products made from scraps”. Patchwork, only our way.





It would seem, why dive so deeply? But it seems that the presence of a comprehensive theory of tailoring, cooking or woodwork will allow some schools to limit themselves to it. And not to fence a garden with stoves, stoves and workbenches, bypassing the financial deficit and tightening fire protection requirements.

Also, by studying the program of “works,” especially in terms of variability, one can trace the connection between them and pre-professional training. Which is logical, especially closer to the end of general secondary education.

By 9th grade, that is. Here is a module just for 9th grade: “Production and Technology.” Contains concepts such as entrepreneurship, corporate culture, business ideas… Or robotics: robotic lines, Internet of things, smart home, etc. Educational and quite justified by the end of basic school.

If someone is afraid of drawing, as in years past, with whatman paper and a drawing board, there is no need to be afraid. Module “Computer graphics. Drawing” immediately begins with the study of CAD (computer-aided design system). And various technical drawings and sketches, sectional details, specifications, etc. then go through the theory part.

Many people are probably interested in the most advanced of the required modules: “3D modeling, prototyping, layout.” Here, too, most likely, the knowledge is initial and speculative. They study the polygonal mesh, areas of 3D printing, materials for 3D printing… Which is understandable: for full-fledged studies, you need not only a full class of high-speed computers, but also a 3D printer with all the accessories.

A lot of irony in social networks was caused by additional variable modules on “Trud”: veterinary medicine, animal feed, nutritional value of feed, milking…. However, the “digital smart farm” or the profession of a poultry farm operator, as well as the whole variable module “City Farm”, Few people also found understanding. And how much fun was caused by the part of the “Crop Growing” course – “Collecting and preparing mushrooms”…

But in general, it is clear that all this is relevant for rural schools and future applicants to agricultural universities. Which, by the way, are on the rise. For other cases, optional modules have been prepared, such as “Automated Systems” (for grades 8-9), for example. Where not only control logic is discussed, but also the basics of electrical engineering, and also programming languages, a “bank of programs” for production management.

– I see that the Technology programs approved last year were supplemented with several modules from additional training programs (additional training programs. – Auto.), says methodologist and education expert Anastasia Gordeeva. — And it turns out that “Labor” is still broader than “Technology” was. “Aircraft modeling”, for example, is an additional program for 2019, at the end of which the student must make a flying model of an airplane.

“Media Technologies” is also a relatively new module, it is dedicated to the work of the media. As far as I know, you don’t even need a studio there, like for media classes. All you need is tripods, which everyone already has at home, and a camera with microphones. And computers, of course. But I don’t even know who the “City Farmers” are…
