German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to hold separate discussions on military support for Ukraine at the upcoming European Union leaders’ summit on February 1. According to Politico, he plans to call on some countries to increase supplies of defense equipment. During the February summit, the EU is expected to adopt a financial assistance package for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros.
The German official said Scholz expressed concern about insufficient arms supplies to Ukraine from most EU member states and called on allies to step up efforts to support Ukraine.
Scholz also noted that he had asked the European Union to compile a list of all military assistance that member countries plan to provide to Ukraine in 2024, and proposed to do this “no later than” the February 1 summit. This move, according to the publication, is expected to increase pressure on countries such as France, Italy and Spain, which have so far provided “relatively little” military assistance to the Ukrainian side.
