Russia and Iran discussed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement

During the negotiations, the Foreign Ministers of Russia and Iran Sergei Lavrov and Amir Abdollahian discussed, among other issues, work on a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. This was announced on Tuesday, January 9, by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
As the Iranian Foreign Ministry explained, the parties considered “some issues of bilateral relations, including the transit of goods and work on an agreement on comprehensive strategic cooperation.”
Moscow and Tehran continue to increase cooperation in various areas. In particular, in the first quarter of 2024 it is planned between Iran and Russia signing a currency agreement, facilitating trade in rubles and rials. The head of the Central Bank of Iran, Mohammad Farzin, noted that the unbalanced volume of exports and imports between countries is a challenge that can be resolved by this agreement.
However, Elena Dunaeva, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics and Economic Geography of Asian and African Countries of Moscow State University, warned that part of the Iranian population and elite interested in worsening contacts with Russia and establishing relations with Western countries.
