Scholz supported the idea of creating a “European political community”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking at the Charles University in Prague, said he supported the idea of French President Emmanuel Macron to create a “European political community”.
“Such an association – and this is important to me – is not an alternative to the upcoming enlargement of the European Union,” the Chancellor explained (quote according to TASS).
According to him, the EU lacks a forum where EU leaders could discuss cooperation issues with partner countries several times a year. As an example, Scholz named security issues, energy and the fight against global warming.
The idea of creating a “European political community” belongs to Macron. In his opinion, the initiative will improve interaction with countries that have no prospects of joining the EU in the near future. Macron clarified that the community does not imply Russia’s participation in it. According to him, in the east of Europe it will cover Ukraine and Moldova.
At the end of June the idea supported EU summit. The European Council explained that the geopolitical community will not be a substitute for EU membership for candidates. “This is not an alternative to EU enlargement. The idea is to ensure security and stability on the European continent,” said European Council President Charles Michel.
Earlier, on June 23, the European Parliament adopted a resolution to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for EU membership as soon as possible. Georgia, as Michel pointed out, can also get the status of a candidate after a series of reforms.
