Scholz called Ukraine an independent state during the Soviet era

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Ukraine was an “independent state” already in the days of the Soviet Union. The revelations were made in an interview with the ARD TV channel.
Scholz explained that Ukraine was a member of the UN. In addition, the chancellor added, Russia was the first to leave the Soviet Union, not Ukraine.
The politician continued, noting that at that time Crimea was part of the Ukrainian SSR.
It should be noted that the Ukrainian SSR, being within the framework of the USSR, was, indeed, on an equal footing with a number of states, as well as the Byelorussian SSR, a founding member of the UN. At the same time, with the collapse of the USSR, the Russian Federation became the only legal successor of the USSR in the UN Security Council.
In addition, Scholz did not specify that the adoption of a declaration of Russian sovereignty in 1990 was not a secession from the USSR. At the same time, Ukraine left the USSR in August 1991, having adopted a Decree on the declaration of independence, and Russia in December 1991.
