The Bundeswehr (German armed forces) is experiencing a shortage of ammunition, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“Over the past few decades, we have taken the wrong course when it comes to providing the Bundeswehr with ammunition. This is something that we are now very aware of how important it is to be able to provide constant resupply there, not only because of the military actions in Ukraine, but also because we are also looking at our own numbers, ”said Scholz (quote according to TASS).
According to him, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht is “very interested in filling this gap.”
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of Germany notes that the German authorities in the first three quarters of 2022 issued permits for the supply of military products to Ukraine in the amount of 775 million euros. Among the weapons delivered to Kyiv are Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, Mars multiple launch rocket systems, Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, and the IRIS-T air defense system.
In September, the Bild newspaper reported that most members of the German government support the transfer of additional weapons to Ukraine, including Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks, Marder infantry fighting vehicles and Fuchs armored personnel carriers. At the same time, German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht said that Berlin would not supply Western-style battle tanks to Kyiv until none of the German partners made such a decision.
