German Chancellor Olaf Scholz granted the resignation of German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, according to a cabinet statement. A decision on a successor will be made “as soon as possible”.
Lambrecht earlier today asked Scholz to relieve her of her post. According to the publication Welt, the minister has been criticized for several months, she was repeatedly called for to vacate her post. Critics accused her of a “sluggish” start of procurement for the Bundeswehr or a lack of experience, and also condemned her public appearances.
Lambrecht became the second minister to resign since Scholz took office. In April 2022, Anne Spiegel resigned as Minister for Families, Women, Senior Citizens and Youth following allegations of neglect in her previous position.
Prior to Lambrecht, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was Minister of Defense. She replaced her party member Ursula von der Leyen in this post, who was elected head of the European Commission.
