At the World Cup in Qatar, a scandal erupted over the Russian flag.
Cameroon national team midfielder Gael Ondua, who also has Russian citizenship, reportedly put on boots with the Russian flag for the match of the first round of the group stage of the World Cup with the Swiss team (0:1). After the match, the football player said that the Russian flag on his boots is a sign of respect for the country in which he grew up.
This caused outrage in Norway. The general secretary of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, Berit Lindeman, said that this situation shows that “FIFA is out of control.”
“This is a deliberate act to leave a mark on the decision to exclude Russia,” he said, stressing that, in his opinion, the presence of the Russian flag in this situation is “inappropriate.”
Lindemann also accused Ondua of a complete lack of “tact, tone and understanding of the tense situation in which Europe finds itself”, and called his act “a provocation”.
Earlier, FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) suspended Russian teams and clubs from participation in international competitions for an indefinite period, and therefore the Russian team was unable to play in the play-offs for the right to participate in the World Cup in Qatar.
