Relatives of the victims demand maximum punishment for the crew commander
A scandal and mutual reproaches marked the debate at the trial of the crash of the Sukhoi Superjet at Sheremetyevo Airport in May 2019. The intensity of passions in the hall of the Khimki court was such that the judge had to make comments to the victims.
According to the MK reporter from the courtroom, Kristina Sivokon was “honored” with remarks – her mother Larisa was among the 41 passengers who died as a result of a fire on board the ship. She called the lawyer Igor Trunov a “scoundrel”, for which she received a rebuke.
Recall that Trunov represents the interests of 16 victims. He stated that the guilt of the crew commander Denis Evdokimov in the deaths of people has not been proven. This means that his actions should be reclassified from the 3rd to the 1st part of Article 263 (“Violation of the rules for traffic safety and operation of air transport”). The maximum penalty under this article is two years in prison. Recall that the state prosecution proposed to sentence Yevdokimov to 6 years in a colony-settlement.
Apparently, this position of Trunov caused dissatisfaction with the relatives of the victims, who hope for the most severe punishment. Andrey Zenin, who lost his son in the crash, said that he hoped for imprisonment in a general regime colony, and not in a colony-settlement. However, another lawyer of the same victims generally proposed to apply the statute of limitations to Evdokimov and release him from punishment.
Evdokimov’s defense, like Trunov, brought down all his anger on expert Yuri Sytnik. “He is, of course, a good pilot, but he retired in 2009, so he could not drive a Superjet,” the lawyer explained. Recall that it was the testimony of expert Sytnyk that formed the basis of the accusation.
The experts of the State Research Institute of Civil Aviation, according to the defenders, could not answer the question of whether the Superjet was operational in the air. And Evdokimov did everything to land the plane, but could not prevent the destruction of the landing gear and damage to the fuel tanks, which led to a fire on board.
