According to researchers, the scallop shell is, firstly, very durable, secondly, it has high antibacterial properties, and thirdly, it is safe for the body. Therefore, it can be used in dentistry, in particular, in the production of medical implants.
In fact, the problem of installing dental implants in many patients is due to the fact that the implant itself does not take root well. Therefore, a large number of antibiotics are required to prevent complications. According to MISIS experts, the use of a natural biomaterial with antibacterial activity, and these properties are exactly what the scallop shell has, can solve the problem of the “survival” of the implant.
By the way, at first, scientists studied blue mussel shells for their use in implantology, but they came to the conclusion that scallop shells are more durable, have stronger antibacterial properties, and are completely non-toxic.
