SBU charged ex-Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine with embezzlement of $27 million

Former Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov received new suspicion from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the case of embezzlement and embezzlement of budget funds in the amount of almost 1 billion hryvnia ($27.6 million), reports publication “Strana.ua”.

The SBU press service did not name the former deputy minister, but clarified, that he held his post in the Ukrainian department from 2021 to 2023. The former deputy minister, together with acting. O. Directors of the Department of Public Procurement of the Ministry of Defense purchased low-quality winter military uniforms from a private company in 2022.

The investigation found that the Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot use the uniform that was purchased. The uniform turned out to be unsuitable for “operation in the cold season in conditions of intense combat operations,” the report says.

A criminal case was initiated against the former official and his accomplice under two articles: Part 5 of Art. 191 (misappropriation, embezzlement of property or taking possession of it through abuse of official position) and Part 2 of Art. 28 and part 1 art. 114-1 (obstruction of the legitimate activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations).

Both attackers are in custody and face imprisonment for up to 12 years with confiscation of property, the SBU added.
