Sber confirmed to Kommersant that the Megamarket marketplace has withdrawn from sale the books listed in the list of restrictions in connection with the law banning LGBT propaganda. At the same time, the press service noted that the list was formed back in December 2022 at the initiative of the Association of Internet Trade Companies (AKIT).
The list of books received by the Megamarket marketplace was published earlier today by journalist Alexander Plyushchev (recognized as a foreign agent). Mr. Pluschev did not specify who compiled it and when he sent it. Among the more than 250 titles on the list were works by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Stephen King, Haruki Murakami, Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Stefan Zweig and others.
“This list of books really exists – it was collected back in December 2022 on the initiative of AKIT by all participants in the book market in connection with the adoption of a law banning LGBT propaganda on the Internet, the media, books and other sources. “Megamarket took part in the discussion and preparation of the list and, like all market participants, hid the goods from its display,” the Sber press service told Kommersant.
President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning LGBT propaganda on the Internet, media, books, audiovisual services, cinema and advertising in December 2022. Among other things, Roskomnadzor considers as propaganda attempts to arouse interest in non-traditional sexual relationships and help change negative attitudes to positive ones. In November 2023, the Supreme Court banned the activities of the formally non-existent “international LGBT social movement” in the country, recognizing it as extremist.
