From the summer of 2024, Saudi Arabia will host the eSports World Championships annually. Prime Minister of the Kingdom Mohammed bin Salman said that the competition will include the most popular games of various genres.
“The eSports World Cup is the next logical step in the kingdom’s journey to becoming a global hub for eSports and eSports, offering experiences that push the boundaries of the industry,” said Mohammed bin Salman during an international sports conference in Riyadh (quoted by Al-Arabiya).
According to the Prime Minister, the World Championship will be the largest among such events, and the prize fund will be the largest in the history of electronic sports. He did not provide any other details.
The government believes that the competition will replenish the state budget with additional funds due to the influx of tourists, and will also lead to the creation of 39 thousand new jobs and the development of the entertainment industry.
In July of this year, the Riyadh Masters Dota 2 tournament with a prize fund of $15 million was held in Saudi Arabia. The tournament took place as part of the Gamers8 festival, consisting of several e-sports disciplines. The total prize fund was $45 million.
