Russian President Vladimir Putin meeting with alumni higher military educational institutions in Moscow said that in the near future strategic missile systems “Sarmat” will take up combat duty. According to the head of state, they will be equipped with a new heavy missile.
“The most important task here is the development of the nuclear triad, which is a key guarantee of Russia’s military security and global stability. Already about half of the units and formations of the Strategic Missile Forces are equipped with the latest Yars complexes, and the troops are being re-equipped with modern missile systems with the Avangard hypersonic warhead. In the near future, the first launchers of the Sarmat complex with a new heavy missile will take up combat duty,” Putin said.
The President emphasized that the arming of the Russian nuclear triad makes it possible “to effectively and reliably provide strategic deterrence and maintain the global balance of power.”
Sarmat is a Russian 5th generation silo-based strategic missile system with a heavy multi-stage liquid-propellant ICBM. “Sarmat” is designed to replace the Soviet missiles R-36M2 “Voevoda”.
In February, Vladimir Putin announcedthat Russia in 2023 will continue to pay increased attention to the nuclear triad. According to him, in addition to the deployment of the Sarmats, the serial production of the Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic systems and the mass deliveries of the Tsirkon sea-launched hypersonic missiles are also expected. In the coming years, the Navy will include three more nuclear submarines, the President of the Russian Federation noted.
