Sarkozy: Ukraine’s accession to NATO will not contribute to peace

Integration of Ukraine into NATO will not bring peace, stated former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to BFMTV.
Sarkozy believes that “Ukraine’s accession to NATO will not contribute to peace” and will become “a provocation for Russia.” In his opinion, Ukraine “must remain neutral.”
“I just wanted to say that there are two ways out to resolve one conflict: either the destruction of one of the parties… or a diplomatic discussion,” the ex-president added.
BFMTV notes that Sarkozy’s position is opposite to the opinion of the current head of France, Emmanuel Macron. The day before, Politico published reportedthat Macron has changed his position on the Ukrainian conflict: the French president has now taken on the role of one of Ukraine’s strongest allies, promising support and seeking to lead on issues such as NATO membership.
August 16 Sarkozy in an interview with Le Figaro named the prospects for the return of Crimea to Ukraine are illusory, since the inhabitants of the peninsula still consider themselves Russian. At the same time, he insisted on holding a referendum in Crimea and new regions of Russia under the supervision of the international community to confirm the “real state of affairs.”
