Moldovan President Maia Sandu acknowledged the low level of support for the idea of uniting the country with Romania among citizens. She stated this in an interview with the Geopolitique portal.
“There is support for unification with Romania, but it is not enough. There are people who promote this idea, but they are not enough,” said the President (quote according to TASS). At the same time, according to Sandu, about 1 million people received Romanian citizenship.
Because of such low support, Moldova has focused on integration with the European Union, the president added. “We have enough support to become a member of the EU,” she said.
On May 19, Sandu assured that Moldova will fulfill all the conditions for joining the European Union by mid-2023. She clarified that the country will be ready to fulfill them by the time when questions about starting negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine on joining the EU appear on the agenda of the Council of Europe.
In 2022, the republic officially received the status of a candidate for EU membership. Since then, the influence of the European Union on the country has increased significantly, Moldova began to impose restrictions on Russian media, as well as accuse Moscow of “destabilization”. In addition, many government officials in Moldova are in favor of unification with Romania – the country has already replaced the official name of the state language from Moldovan to Romanian.
In mid-March, the Moldovan parliament adopted amendments to the legislation on renaming the state language from Moldovan to Romanian. During the voting in the first reading, opposition deputies chanted “shame” and “early elections.” On March 22, Sandu, who also has Romanian citizenship, informed on approval of the renaming of the state language.
