The International Chess Federation (FIDE) said that Polish chess player Jan-Krzysztof Duda’s refusal to shake hands with Russian coach Denis Khismatullin was not a violation of the rules. At the same time, the federation’s ethics commission has the right to impose sanctions on Mr. Duda, the FIDE press service reported RBC.

“This can only happen if the opponent whose hand was refused to be shaken requests it from the ethics commission. In the situation with Duda-Khismatullin, no such statements were made,” FIDE said.

Earlier, before the start of a game at the World Championship in Uzbekistan, Denis Khismatullin extended his hand to the Polish chess player, but Jan-Krzysztof Duda refused the handshake. The athlete himself did not explain the reasons for his decision. Polish edition Rzeczpospolita suggested that the refusal was due to the fact that Denis Khismatullin allegedly repeatedly traveled to the combat zone in Ukraine.
