The new 12th package of EU sanctions against Russia may include goods for decoration, handicrafts and construction. In particular, Lithuania proposes to discuss a ban on the import of nails, nuts, heating radiators, sewing needles and knitting needles, writes EUobserver. It is clarified that the list of little things stretched over dozens of pages. According to the authors, the restrictions will help destroy Russian industrial potential.

How dependent is the market on these European goods? Kommersant FM discussed this with the founder of Good Wood, Alexander Dubovenko:

“Nails, hardware and construction fasteners mainly come from China and Turkey. They have never come from the European Union because it is a fairly cheap material. Moreover, the EU itself purchases them from China and other countries.

As for radiators, many European brands were indeed represented in Russia before the events in Ukraine began. Radiators are divided into two types: conventional and designer. And it’s more difficult with the latter, because until recently they were produced only in the European Union. But, as far as I know, several factories have already appeared in Russia that offer good designer radiators.

At the same time, now a German product imported through Kazakhstan will cost approximately 10 thousand rubles. You can easily buy a similar Turkish one for 5 thousand rubles.

At the same time, of course, the quality of Russian and European radiators may differ, because after all, these companies have been working for a long time. It is also important not only the quality of the products themselves, but also how much the manufacturers are willing to provide warranties.

Serious Western companies that were present here issued special certificates according to which, in the event of a radiator failure, they replaced it free of charge and also compensated for all associated damage. And Russian players, of course, are just taking their first steps.”

In 2022, Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko noted that nails are not produced in Russia, despite large volumes of metal production. The main suppliers were Belarus, China and Finland.

In addition, recently among Russians there has been an increase in demand for handicraft goods, which are also proposed to be included in the sanctions list. According to Wildberries, last year sales of sewing kits, needle beds, threads and crochet hooks doubled.

The problem is that high-quality sewing accessories are almost not produced in Russia, noted the founder of the Totti brand, Irina Polykovskaya: “In Russia there is a very limited number of such goods, and if they exist, the choice is very small. And our turnover grows every season, and therefore there is no other choice, we buy everything from China.

I generally doubt that such products are made in Russia, I mean buttons, snaps, rivets, zippers. All China, possibly Türkiye.

As for prices, it all depends on quality. It can be metal or plastic, and the cost will differ significantly. We always buy very high quality accessories. It is not inferior to its Italian counterparts, for example. And often, to suit our volumes, the same buttons are painted to match the fabric, and we make our own volume, our own sizes, with our own logos.”

According to EUobserver, the European Union will begin discussing the 12th package of sanctions behind closed doors starting next week. Lithuania and Poland propose to ban cooperation with Rosatom, as well as the purchase of uranium, liquefied gas, steel and diamonds from Russia. Estonia demands the introduction of a full trade embargo against the Russian Federation to stop the circumvention of sanctions.
