Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Russia’s Sherpa in BRICS Sergei Ryabkov assured that this intergovernmental organization will not be renamed after the expansion of its membership.
According to him, the abbreviation BRICS, in which the names of the participating countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) were originally “encrypted,” is planned to be preserved, since it represents a brand and a recognizable “trademark.”
“Leaders in Johannesburg came to a common understanding that, despite the expansion that took place on January 1, 2024, the association… will retain the name BRICS… This is a brand, a recognizable trademark,” Ryabkov said.
