Russia’s trade surplus halved in January

The trade surplus of Russia in January 2023 amounted to $10.732 billion, follows from the data of the Federal Customs Service (FCS). Compared to last year, the positive foreign trade balance of the Russian Federation decreased by 52%. In 2022, the trade surplus amounted to $22.5 billion.
According to the Federal Customs Service, federal budget revenues from the export of goods from Russia in January decreased by 28% to $32.9 billion compared to the results of the same month in 2022 ($45.8 billion). Imports decreased by 4.7% – to $22.2 billion – compared to the previous year ($23.3 billion).
Russian foreign trade turnover in 2022 increased by 8.1% year-on-year and reached $850.5 billion. Export volumes increased by 19.9% to $591.5 billion, imports decreased by 11.7% to $259.1 billion.
March 13 FCS announced on the resumption of publication of data on customs statistics of foreign trade. The agency stopped posting data on exports and imports in April 2022 after the imposition of Western sanctions.
