Russia’s population decreased by 243.8 thousand people over the year – Kommersant

The permanent population of Russia as of January 1, 2024 amounted to 146.206 million people, according to preliminary estimates by Rosstat (table available for download). Over the year, the figure decreased by 243.8 thousand (-0.17%). The data does not take into account statistics on the population of new regions – the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

The urban population of Russia is approximately 109 million 605.7 thousand people, the rural population is 36 million 597.9 thousand. Rosstat recorded the largest population growth over the year in the Moscow region (+59.2 thousand), Moscow (+50.5 thousand .) and Tyumen region (+41.8%). The largest decrease in population was observed in the Kemerovo and Nizhny Novgorod regions (–20.2 thousand and –20 thousand, respectively), as well as in the Saratov and Sverdlovsk regions (–19 thousand and –16 thousand).

In the Rosstat forecast published in the fall of 2023, the population was expected to decline by 368 thousand. According to the base scenario of the statistical service, by January 1, 2046, the population of Russia will be 138.8 million people. Optimistic forecast assumes an increase in the population of Russia by 4.59 million people, to 150.87 million. According to the pessimistic option, by 2046 the country’s population will decrease by 15.4 million and amount to 130.6 million people.
