The unexpected frosts that struck Moscow and European Russia immediately after the New Year disrupted the plans of many families. Walking, sledding, and skating rinks are cancelled. Children are eager to go outside, where the sun finally shines and the snow sparkles. What should you do – stay at home due to bad weather or go for a walk? It would be a pity if this week of Siberian frosts becomes a “minus vacation” for children.

Most doctors still advise not to sit recklessly at home until January 9th. They remember the same Siberians for whom there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. It is recommended to wear thermal underwear, multi-layered clothing, overalls or “polar” suits on top, a hat, mittens, and good warm shoes are required. It is also important to protect your face, especially your lips with cosmetic oil or rich cream. Like, in the North they always smeared their cheeks with lard and sent their children to school at minus 40 degrees.

But not everything is so simple. It is important to look at the age of the child; the younger, the more vulnerable they are to low temperatures. For sports training, immunity. However, the frosts came suddenly, and even the adults did not have time to adapt to them.

“I would say this: you can go for a walk, but you have to decide for yourself whether it’s worth it,” says pediatrician from Moscow Evgeny Serdobinsky. – This is especially true for children and those children who have recently suffered from acute respiratory viral infections or are generally susceptible to seasonal diseases. Parents whose children have cardiovascular diseases should not take risks: cold air narrows the lumen of the bronchi, which makes breathing difficult. And of course, those who have asthma or cold allergies should not walk down the street in the cold.

For the rest, it is quite possible that the option of short walks, such movement as “short dashes,” would be suitable. Low air temperatures are not a reason to lock yourself at home. You can go on a visit, to the theater, to an exhibition, to a competition, or to a cafe.

But, I believe that there is no need to organize a family hike if the thermometer drops below 27-30 degrees. This is the activation temperature (cancellation of classes) for schoolchildren in Moscow and the region. Such indicators in our region have already been recognized as extreme and it is better for children to stay at home.

Doctors advise that if you suspect frostbite, you should never rub yourself with snow, alcohol, or get into a hot bath; this can damage the affected skin. There is no use in drawing iodine nets, swallowing oil or putting mustard on your heels – and such old grandmother’s recipes are still in use. Hot tea, a warm blanket, a jacket and socks will warm you just as well, and without harm to the body. And of course, if the skin turns white, peeling, loss of sensitivity and other signs that the frostbite situation is serious, do not self-medicate, but run to the doctor.

Yes, and staying at home because of the frost can also be useful for a reason. Psychologists recommend considering such forced seclusion during the cold holidays as a reason for new family unity. You can play board games or even remember such antiquities as burime, charades, “letters of notes” or “sea battle”. To revive the company, you can make artificial intelligence in the computer or “living” in the column one of the participants in the games. Watch a movie together and discuss it. Sing in a computer application or karaoke. Cook something together and have a family tasting. If you think about it, frost has historically been a reason for warm and intimate gatherings in Russian families.
