Russians urged to check their iPhones after spyware scandal

Member of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council Artyom Sheikin urged Russians to check their iPhones for viruses. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the Center for Public Relations (DSP) of the FSB of Russia reported that intelligence officers had uncovered a US intelligence operation, which was carried out through a virus program on Apple smartphones. It was reported that the FSB, together with the Federal Security Service (FSO) of the Russian Federation, uncovered an intelligence operation of American intelligence services, carried out using Apple mobile devices. In the course of ensuring the security of the domestic telecommunications structure, intelligence officers found anomalies characteristic only for Apple smartphones, which are caused by the operation of previously unknown malware that uses software vulnerabilities provided by the manufacturer.
Sheikin noted that suspicions regarding the deliberate infection of Apple devices were confirmed.
“In this regard, I urge everyone to check their iPhones for virus infection,” he said, adding that Russian companies have special programs to find out if information from smartphones goes into the wrong hands.
As reported, the infected iPhone passed under the complete control of those carrying out surveillance. The attackers were interested in recordings from microphones, photos from instant messengers, geolocation and data on other actions of the owner.
Regarding the scandal, Apple said it denied working with US intelligence agencies to infect smartphones. The company also said that it “has never worked with any government to install a virus on any Apple devices and never will.”
