This year, slightly more than half of Russians (58%) plan to celebrate the Old New Year, showed survey VTsIOM. For comparison, in 2009 it was celebrated by two thirds of respondents (67%). The data allows us to conclude that the tradition of celebrating the New Year twice is gradually becoming a thing of the past. The tradition of celebration is supported mainly by Russians over 60 years of age (66%), rural residents (64%), and active television viewers (69%). Mostly young people under 35 (46–48%), metropolitan residents (48%), and active Internet users (53%) do not celebrate.
The survey also showed that two-thirds of Russians (65%) are against making the old New Year another official holiday. Every fourth respondent (27%) supported the idea.
