Roskomnadzor began checking the Duolingo app for LGBT propaganda
The free platform for learning foreign languages, Duolingo, came under inspection by Roskomnadzor due to a complaint from Russian activists.
How reported website vn.ru, a group of social activists wrote a complaint to the department, saying that the application promotes LGBT people (the Supreme Court recognized the “LGBT movement” as an extremist organization and banned its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation). In turn, social activists received a “signal” from certain “Ufa parents” who were outraged by some foreign language assignments.
Thus, it is reported that English language learners were asked to repeat out loud the given phrase that “Ben and Peter love each other” and about how “Clara met her wife Maria” in a bar.
“Parents don’t know how to explain the proposed dialogue to elementary school students,” vn.ru quotes the indignation of citizens, “and not traumatize their psyche.”
On Friday, February 9, RKN told TASS that they were checking Duolingo “for the dissemination of information promoting LGBT people.”
