Russian swimmer Evgenia Chikunova has updated the world record in the 200m breaststroke at the Russian Championships in Kazan. The Russian woman overcame the distance for 2 minutes 17.55 seconds. The previous record – 2 minutes 18.95 seconds – belonged to Tatiana Schoonmaker from South Africa.
“I admitted the possibility that today the world record would be broken, but I was not completely sure that this was possible. How will I celebrate? I’ll probably buy myself something tasty or go to a restaurant with my family when I return to St. Petersburg, ”said Chikunova (quote – TASS).
The press service of the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics; WA) told the agency that they would conduct an official procedure for checking the world record. After confirmation by WA, the result will be officially approved.
Evgenia Chikunova is 18 years old. She is a native of St. Petersburg, a pupil of coaches Vitta Novozhilova and Yuri Maslov. In 2019, Chikunova set a youth national record (2 minutes 22.67 seconds) in the 200m breaststroke. The athlete has a silver medal at the World Championships in short course swimming and a silver medal at the European Championships in the combined relay.
