The commander of the Pacific Fleet, Viktor Liina, confirmed that work is underway to re-equip Project 949A Antey submarines with a new missile system. The new complexes are designed to solve problems similar to those of the Yasen submarines.
Sources previously reported that the modernized Project 949AM submarines will become the most armed Russian underwater cruise missile carriers; they are capable of carrying up to 72 Caliber, Onyx or Zircon missiles.
The commander of the Pacific Fleet, in an interview with Military Acceptance, noted the high potential for modernization of Project 949A submarines, emphasizing that one of the submarines of this project is currently being modernized.
The Yasen multipurpose submarines are currently equipped with Caliber and Oniks missiles. It is expected that they will be constantly armed with the latest Zircon hypersonic missiles. For all three types of missiles, Yasenya uses universal vertical launchers.
