American startup Telly, led by Russian Ilya Pozin, plans to release a free 4K TV. The device is equipped with two screens, one of which is designed to display ads.
The second screen, referred to as Smart Display (“smart display” – “Vedomosti”), is located below the main one and is separated by a soundbar. In addition to advertising, it can display other information: weather, exchange rates and stocks, sports results, and more.
If the main screen of the device is not used, ads may be displayed on it. This confirmed Telly Chief Strategy Officer Dallas Lawrence in an interview with The Verge: “When the Theater display (top screen) is not in use, the ad unit can come to life in a fun way by connecting the two screens.”
The TV runs on its own TellyOS operating system, which means that you won’t be able to install third-party apps, at least not yet. The company has agreed to cooperate with music streaming services, but with which ones it is not specified.
In the middle of the soundbar is a camera designed for “advanced fitness programs with motion tracking” and Zoom video conferencing. At the same time, the camera has a shutter that can be closed if necessary.
In addition, the TV will collect data about the content you watch, the length of your sessions, and “how you interact with the TV,” including search queries, button presses, and even “the physical presence of you and any other person using the TV at any given time.” “.
It is possible to refuse to collect data – in this case, you will have to return the TV to the manufacturer or pay $ 500 from a bank card, which is indicated during the execution of the contract.
Shipping of the first 500,000 free TVs to recipients will begin in the summer of 2023.
