A rather specific invention was recently patented by scientists from the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology. University specialists have created an artificial vagina for rabbits.
As it became known to MK, the device was not created to please the animals, but rather it will please rabbit breeders: an artificial vagina is designed to collect sperm and then inseminate rabbits.
The device consists of two tubes of different diameters, an elastic insert and a seed receptacle. The tubes are inserted one into the other, an elastic insert is placed in the cavity (it imitates the rabbit’s vagina), a seed receptacle with a scale printed on it to measure the volume of sperm is attached to the narrow tube. Before collecting the seed from the male, the artificial vagina is heated in a water bath to 50-60 degrees, and then the inner surface of the elastic liner is lubricated with sterile vaseline. According to the inventors, the utility model makes it possible to preserve the biological usefulness of sperm both in the field and in the laboratory. Another valuable quality of the device is that rabbit breeders can build it themselves.
