Scientists from Russia have found a way to prepare multicomponent crystals of miconazole. Miconazole is a synthetic broad-spectrum antifungal drug with extremely low water solubility. It is used to treat fungal diseases – systemic mycoses. This was reported in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
This disease affects the internal organs of a person. Basically, systemic mycoses appear in people who have weak immunity. Tablets, capsules, syrups are used to treat the disease, but their minus is that they have an extremely low solubility in water.
In order for drugs to be better absorbed in the body, pharmaceuticals use multicomponent molecular crystals, which are also called co-crystals.
“We found out that the most optimal method for obtaining multicomponent miconazole crystals is the suspension method,” said Aleksey Manin, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Medicinal Compounds of the Institute of Chemistry and Solutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Studies have shown that the drug based on new crystalline forms is absorbed almost 5 times better than the original drug.
