Deputy Minister of Justice Vsevolod Vukolov, during a meeting with Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova, said that Russian prisoners were allowed to buy and download e-books. Now they will be able to read books using tablets that are not connected to the Internet. This was reported by TASS.

According to Mr. Vukolov, before this, internal regulations only allowed prisoners to buy e-books in stores. After the innovation, those serving sentences will be able to download the materials of their criminal case and legal literature to their tablets.

Vsevolod Vukolov also reported that correctional institutions (PIs) were equipped with electronic terminals for complaints and appointments with a doctor. According to him, the issue of keeping women and their children in correctional institutions is currently being discussed, as well as the issue of increasing the wages of medical staff. “The issue of financing is always quite complex, but the new leadership of the FSIN pays attention to these issues,” he said.

According to the current internal regulations, prisoners have the right to buy literature in stores, subscribe to newspapers and magazines, and store books in their bedside tables (up to ten copies) or in the correctional facility library. All literature received by the correctional institution, purchased by convicts in stores, is checked by the administration for propaganda of war, incitement of national and religious hatred, the cult of violence or cruelty, as well as pornographic materials. Verification time is seven working days. Mr. Vukolov did not specify how electronic books will be checked.
