The Russian Orbital Station (ROS) may get a new name after the design stage is completed, TASS reports citing Roscosmos CEO Yuri Borisov.
According to Borisov, the name “ROS” is still used in the internal documents of Roskosmos. “Perhaps, after the completion of the design, the national station will be renamed,” he said.
ROS is a planned Russian orbital station to replace the ISS after 2024. The project is being developed by RSC Energia specialists. The station will be created on the basis of modules originally intended for the ISS. In total, the station will include five modules, and its mass will be 60 tons.
The station is planned to be launched into a high-latitude orbit for the first time in the history of orbital stations so that it can work in the interests of Russia, covering the entire globe, including the Arctic, with its trajectory. To do this, we will have to increase energy consumption during launch into orbit and increase the level of radiation during the flight of the station through the polar regions.
