Russian oil from Sakhalin-2 was withdrawn from sanctions at the request of Tokyo

An employee of the Department of Natural Resources and Energy under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, on condition of anonymity, said that the United States and the European Union temporarily removed oil from the Sakhalin-2 project from restrictions at the urgent request of Tokyo.
But the Japanese authorities agreed to the extension of the price ceiling and other restrictive measures to it.
The agency’s source stressed that Sakhalin-1 is very important for Tokyo, as it supplies almost 9% of the country’s liquefied natural gas.
“It goes almost entirely to electricity generation, providing 3% of its generation in Japan. The Sakhalin-2 project is focused mainly on the production of LNG, however, an insignificant amount of oil is also produced there, ”said an employee of the department. He explained that this situation was the reason for the withdrawal of oil supplies from the sanctions.
Tokyo intends to maintain its presence in the project, which is one of the few outside the Middle East. Japan depends on this region for oil supplies by 96%.
