Russian athlete Liliya Khuzina won the gold medal at the World Taekwondo Championship in Baku. She defeated Brazilian Caroline Santos in the final bout in the 62 kg weight category.
Khuzina is the first winner of the tournament among Russian taekwondo players, reports “Match TV”. On her way to victory, she also defeated Britain’s Aalia Paell, who is considered one of the strongest athletes in her weight class, in the semi-finals (Powell eventually won the bronze medal of the world championship).
Another Russian taekwondo fighter, Kadyrbek Daurov, today, June 3, won bronze in the category up to 74 kg, losing in the semifinals to Serb Stefan Takov. Prior to this, Russian athletes won two more bronze medals at the tournament.
Russian and Belarusian athletes compete in the tournament in a neutral status – without the use of national flags and anthems. Successful performance in the tournament gives the athletes ranking points, according to which the participants in the taekwondo competitions at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will soon be selected.
