Russian chess player Alexandra Goryachkina defeated Nurgyul Salimova from Bulgaria in a tie-break to win the World Cup. The Russian woman won with white pieces in the second game of the tie-break (a game with a shortened time control). Bronze medalist of the competition was Ukrainian Anna Muzychuk.
The first and second games of the final, which ended in a draw, took place on 19 and 20 August. As a result, Goryachkina won with a score of 2.5:1.5.
Alexandra Goryachkina, 24, is a two-time winner of the Russian Women’s Cup (2012, 2015), Russian champion (2015, 2017, 2020). 20-year-old Nurgyul Salimova is the champion of Bulgaria (2017). The winners of the tournament guaranteed themselves a place in the Candidates Tournament.
The chess tournament, which runs from July 29 to August 25, is organized according to the Olympic system. The top three players qualify for the 2024 Candidates Tournament. In the Women’s World Cup, there were 103 participants on the starting list. The total prize fund of the tournament is $1.8 million. Belarusians and Russians play in it in a neutral status.
In February 2023 the Russian Chess Federation against the backdrop of sanctions passed to the Asian Federation. Chess Federation of Ukraine before the tournament in Baku recommended do not shake hands with the Russians.
