Russian Foreign Ministry: Russian military does not damage nuclear power plants in Ukraine

The actions of the Russian armed forces do not harm the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Igor Vishnevetsky, Deputy Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, stated this on Wednesday at a conference of countries participating in the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

“We have repeatedly stated that the actions of our armed forces in no way harm nuclear security in Ukraine. The Russian military guarded these stations with the sole purpose of preventing the use by nationalist Ukrainian formations, as well as foreign mercenaries in the current situation in the country, to organize nuclear provocations that would have catastrophic consequences,” Vyshnevetsky said.

The diplomat added that the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which is guarded by the Russian military, continues to operate normally, its personnel go to work as in normal peacetime. At the same time, repeated attacks on the Zaporizhzhya NPP of the Armed Forces of Ukraine prove Kyiv’s intentions to create the preconditions for a nuclear catastrophe, the diplomat believes.

“Most recently, on July 18, the Armed Forces of Ukraine again attacked the Zaporozhye NPP with the help of drones. The strike was carried out in close proximity, a few dozen meters from the facilities critical to the plant’s safety. Only by a lucky chance, this did not lead to damage to the critical equipment of the station, the emergence of a man-made disaster. Immediately after this, on July 20, attacks by Ukrainian drones on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant were repeated, which confirms Ukraine’s focus on creating the preconditions for a nuclear catastrophe,” he added.

According to the diplomat, this is only a part of the examples that speak about the threat of the Kyiv regime to the nuclear security of their own country. Vishnevetsky stated about the available evidence, including photo and video materials, confirming the facts he cited.
