16 countries would like to join the BRICS association (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
“The number is increasing, I would prefer sixteen as a more realistic number,” indicated Deputy Minister on the air of Channel One.
According to him, now there are no grounds for reasoning about whether permanent or semi-permanent membership in the organization is possible. “If we use the terminology more typical of the UN in the context of discussions on the reform of the Security Council, I think we should talk about partnership formats, BRICS+ formats and full membership. These are more clear, direct ways to ensure practical cooperation even before full-fledged membership,” he explained.
At the end of February, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that about 20 countries had expressed a desire to join the BRICS and SCO. In July 2022, the diplomat announced a “queue” of countries that would like to join the SCO as full members and observers. Later, he clarified that a number of Arab and Asian countries are showing interest, and Armenia and Azerbaijan have also expressed their desire.
In December last year, the Russian minister also noted that if everyone who wants to join the BRICS is accepted, then the “five” can turn into an association of 15-17 states.
BRICS is an interstate association founded by a group of five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It was created in 2006 on the initiative of Russia as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). In 2022, China will chair the BRICS.
