Russian figure skater Roman Kostomarov develops necrosis of the upper limbs

The Russian figure skater, two-time world champion Roman Kostomarov is suffering from necrosis of the upper limbs. According to 5-tv.ru, the athlete is conscious, but cannot bend his fingers.
On the eve of the 46-year-old athlete underwent surgery on his legs, surgeons, in order to remove all necrosis from his legs and stop the process of cell death, amputated one of his feet. The second was saved by removing the affected tissue and the heel.
Recall that Kostomarov was taken to the hospital on January 10, he complained of chest pain. After examination, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Immediately after hospitalization, the athlete’s condition rapidly deteriorated. It was decided to put him into a medically induced coma and connect him to a ventilator.

Mechnikov Ivan Russu, ventilators and ECMO provide the body with breathing “without lungs”. However, with their long-term use, side problems with blood circulation may occur.
“They led to gangrene (necrosis) in the lower extremities. The examination revealed the presence of gas bubbles in the soft tissues of the left ankle joint,” the expert noted.
