Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko took command of the International Space Station from Danish European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, reported press service “Roscosmos”.
The Danish astronaut presented the Russian with a symbolic key to the ISS, after which the crew traditionally rang the ship’s bell, the press release says. Mr. Kononenko will command the station until September. On March 11, Mr. Mogensen and the other crew members of the Crew-7 mission – NASA astronaut Jasmine Moghbeli, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa and Russian Konstantin Borisov – will leave the ISS to return to Earth.
Oleg Kononenko is the world record holder for the total time spent in space. During his stay at the station he will improve the record, bringing it to 1110 days. The 59-year-old cosmonaut was awarded the title Hero of Russia in 2009, and Hero of Turkmenistan in 2019.
