The Saratov city of Volsk was refused an MRI machine due to its small population
The city of Volsk, Saratov region, was unable to receive an MRI machine as part of the state national project “Healthcare”. According to the local press, the reason was insufficient population.
By data website “Volsk.ru”, the problem was discussed at a meeting of the city specialized commission on January 31. It is reported that the head physician of the district hospital, Vadim Reznikov, told the audience about how his hospital received help from the federal center. Thus, he said that last year he received new equipment worth 55 million rubles, including a CT machine, an X-ray machine and a dental unit for residents of the village of Baranovka.
However, the head of Volsk, Svetlana Frolova, reminded the speaker that the city still does not have such important equipment as a magnetic resonance imaging machine. According to the official, townspeople “have to go to Balakovo” for MRI scans, but “not everyone has the financial means” and patients “have to wait in line.” She asked head physician Reznikov when Volsk would acquire an MRI machine.
“Due to the population of Volsk, MRI is not allowed,” the head physician replied, citing the Ministry of Health.
He also told the mayor that the CT machine, in his opinion, is not inferior to MRI in diagnostics, and added that servicing the MRI machine costs half a million rubles a month, and for the Volsk district hospital “this is too expensive.” “Volsk.ru” writes that local deputies did not agree with the head physician and decided to write to the Ministry of Health a request for an MRI machine for the Volsky district.
