Chess players from Russia and Belarus can play under the flag of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) until January 1, 2024. The corresponding decision was taken by the FIDE Council, informs press office of the organization.
The previous permit for athletes from the two countries was valid until December 31. “The right to play under the FIDE flag is granted until January 1, 2024, unless otherwise decided. After this period, in the absence of other requests, the player will be automatically returned to the previous federation, ”the FIDE said.
In February, the federation announced that it would not hold chess competitions and events under its auspices in Russia and Belarus. In March, the FIDE Council banned teams of Russia and Belarus to participate in their competitions. Despite restrictions on athletes, in August Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected to the post of FIDE President. He has led the organization since 2018.
