Russian cars under threat of confiscation in Germany: diplomatic mission expresses concern

The Russian Embassy in Berlin stated that it continues to register cases of seizure of cars from Russian citizens with Russian registration numbers, temporarily imported into Germany for personal use or transit. The diplomatic mission expressed concern about this and drew attention to the inconsistency of the actions of the German customs authorities with international norms and the rights of individuals.
The official commentary, published on the embassy website and in the Telegram channel, says: “We continue to record individual cases of seizure by German customs officials from Russian citizens of vehicles belonging to them, registered in the Russian Federation, temporarily imported into Germany for personal use or transit .”
The embassy emphasized that the German authorities accuse Russian citizens of violating the German law “On Foreign Trade” with reference to the EU Council Regulation No. 833/2014 of July 31, 2014. This regulation contains a ban on the import into the European Union of a number of goods, including cars, regardless of their purpose.
In response to objections from Russia, which claims that the cars were temporarily imported into Germany on legal grounds for personal use, the German customs authorities maintain their position and continue to confiscate vehicles.
The embassy also reported attempts to resolve the problem through various authorities, including the German Foreign Ministry, as well as land authorities, customs authorities and the prosecutor’s office, but so far have not achieved positive results.
